Policy in Kyrgyzstan

2020-2022

In Kyrgyzstan, MAP worked with a network of Youth Theatre for Peace (YTP) drama clubs to establish child and youth-led forums. The aim being to inform policy through theatre-based productions.

In particular, MAP in Kyrgyzstan focused on the migrant child and youth populations in the new settlements of Bishkek. A high proportion of these young people are out-of-school and also from multi-ethnic communities, from the border areas where there is a high risk of violence with neighbouring countries like Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

MAP worked with the Sakhna Nomadic Theatre and art-based institutions (such as the Sahna Artist Group) to explore the use of cultural storytelling forms, especially the Manas or the epics of Central Asia. The intention was to improvise solutions to current issues through the adaptation and development of storytelling traditions.

MAP also built on initiatives such as the ChildFriendly Communities programme (in both rural and urban areas), working alongside national and regional Departments of Education, local government bodies, secondary schools and out-of-school youth.

2023-2024

In 2023 MAP held a symposium in May 2023 and is currently working towards producing a Policy (Art) Brief.
