Following the mural project in Bidara Cina Urban Village, the young muralists were invited to extend their collaboration to a greening project under the Kampung Melayu flyover bridge in East Jakarta in early December 2022. This mural project was part of the city’s Larger Spatial Transformation (Penataan Kawasan Unggulan) programme, which aims to transform unused land into functional spaces through landscaping and planting. Implemented at the urban village level, the greening project under the flyover bridge was a joint effort between Kampung Melayu and Bidara Cina Urban Village. Children from the Bidara Cina and Cipinang Besar Utara Children’s Forums took on the role of painting the four pillars, with each pillar representing a specific theme chosen by the children. These themes included important issues such as the environment, healthy lifestyles, inter-community brawls, and child exploitation. The participatory mural process was facilitated by Vina Puspita, a MAP PhD researcher at the University of Lincoln.
